story

Aragash Gelcha farms five hectares in Halo Shashemene, a village in Ethiopia’s Gedeb district at 2,150 masl. Alongside coffee, she grows enset (false banana) and fruit trees to help support her family of 12 children. Since Ethiopia revised its coffee export laws in 2018, Aragash has held an export license, though she continues to face systemic and logistical challenges in reaching stable, fair markets. Despite this, her family remains committed to the farm, producing around 800 kg of green coffee per hectare and working together year-round to maintain sustainable growing practices.
