story
This coffee is grown at 1,650–1,950 masl by smallholder producers in the Ngozi region of Burundi. Farmers typically cultivate around 250 coffee trees on less than one hectare of land.
Cherries are selectively handpicked by farmers and delivered to Gihere Washing Station, established in 1984, where the coffee is centrally processed. Through their relationship with the washing station, many smallholder farmers gain access to investment, education, and improved infrastructure, supporting both quality and long-term development.
PROCESSING
This lot undergoes a natural process, with ripe cherries selectively handpicked and laid to dry on raised beds. Drying time varies depending on weather conditions, with average temperatures around 21°C throughout most of the year. Gihere Washing Station operates more than 200 drying tables, where coffee is carefully dried before being transported to the capital city of Gitega for dry milling and export.TRACEABILITY
We sourced this coffee through Cafe Imports, who have been working in Burundi since 2006, cupping coffees from over 50 washing stations to find the highest quality coffees. Cafe Imports aims to offer development for smallholders at origin via long-term relationship, premium prices and education.
