Chelazos refers to the people who live in Chalatenango, a northern district of El Salvador bordering Honduras. Around 25 producers contribute to the Los Chelazos lot, many of whom have worked with Caravela for over a decade. Their farms; located at elevations between 1,200 and 1,800 masl, share similar agro-climatic conditions that favor traditional coffee varieties and contribute to excellent cup quality.
Producers of Chalatenango
Los Chelazos is a community lots of coffees from two main cantons: Citalá and La Palma, both of these are part of the Montecristo Trifinio, a tri-border national park shared between El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Designated as a biosphere reserve in 2011, this is a protected area of incredibly rich biodiversity.
Caravela's work in Chalatenango
Caravela started developing relationships with producers in this area in 2012 and opened a buying station and cupping lab in La Palma in December 2015 for better interaction with the producers. Today, the producers behind this community lot have become long-standing partners and relationships who harvest after harvest and deliver highly consistent coffees.
The coffee growers who contribute to this lot own small to medium-sized farms that have very similar agro-climatic conditions that favor excellent plant development, in addition to the good fertility of the soils. At elevations between 1,200 and 1,800 meters above sea level, traditional varieties adapt well so coffee farmers can obtain an outstanding cup complexity.
