Ninga washing station
Building Ninga Washing Station
In 2019, Long Miles purchased land 10 kilometers from their Bukeye Washing Station beside the Nkokoma River. At 1,900 masl, this became Ninga Washing Station, the third washing station to be built by the Long Miles Project, created after recognizing that farmers in the region were traveling long distances to reach washing stations offering fair scales and just prices for their coffee.
Working with the Bumba Hill Community
You have to cross over three rivers and pass by two provincial borders to reach Bumba Hill, where you’ll find a local market where people sell baskets full of freshly harvested crops and trade other household essentials. Only one primary school serves the entire hill. Coffee trees occupy any space they can on this hill, from the edge of the single-track dirt paths that weave through the hills to the doorsteps of farmers’ self-made mud-brick houses.
A long history of violent conflicts has forced residents to retreat into the surrounding hills and forest areas with no established place of refuge to run to. Eventually, farmers return home and try to combat the effects that years of neglect have had on their land. Even still, since its first season, Bumba Hill has produced elegant, complex coffees with layered character and continues to benefit from the Ninga Washing Station and Long Miles support.
